The Glue That Binds

Yay! The Arts! Hoorah!
Why am I so excited to see this blog about how the arts help us mortals in everyday life? I am a product of one of those lucky folks who have had theatre background. I have had extensive training in the performing arts as well as technical theater. To name a few positions in my career, teacher, theatre manager to several community theatres, director, community and professional actress, hair and make-up artist, puppeteer, stage manager, publicist, grant writer, fundraiser and owner of several small businesses. This included payroll, taxes, advertising, budgets, hiring, maintenance, and a sense of humor.
What is the significance of this as opposed to a traditional degree?
These jobs required me to be a creative thinker. I can approach a problem from many different sides, to find a solution when others cannot. Public speaking and conveying my thoughts in a clear manner presents no obstacle. My communication skills were greatly enhanced, and as my confidence grew, led me into promotional jobs. Learning to work as a team, and often as a leader, was invaluable to entering the business world successfully. To incorporate these skills with my business was essential for communication, advertising, people skills, and “targeting my audience” so to speak.
As artistic humans we depend on the hard sciences that would not advance without our providing our ideas and feedback to solve situations. Combining the hard sciences, science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) with the arts is described as the innovative glue that connects the hard sciences. Without that connection, new ideas would not be created. I have a fierce imagination, which can lead me down numerous paths, which will eventually lead me to a successful ending, or steer someone in a direction that will help me see a new point of view, and keep me from getting in over my head. (Life happens) Yes, I use math and the sciences every day, but I also use the arts, the imagination, the action and the glue to keep it all together. Call me Elmer.

A Little about Lyndy:
I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Children’s Theater, where I studied at Heidelberg, Germany.
For the record, I have had brief appearances on Rosanne, Side by Side, The Cape, X’s and O’s and toured with Looking Glass Entertainment Productions, besides multiple plays and hosting a local TV show.
I am staff to 2 cats and a darling baby grandson, although I did think I was retired. In my spare time, I paint, write, create greeting cards, and grow avocado, mangos and papayas in my yard. My only daughter, who is very creative on her own, likes to blog, and has me blogging along with her.
